2012 CAA Championship In Review and Past CAA Champions

NORFOLK, Va. - On March 9, the 2013 CAA Wrestling Championship will be held in the Case Gymnasium on the campus of Boston University. This will be the first time since 2005 that Boston has hosted this conference tournament. 70 wrestlers spread out amongst 10 different weight classes from seven schools will compete for the 19 automatic NCAA Championship berths available to the CAA.

The 2013 CAA Wrestling Championship Schedule:
Quarterfinals: 10 a.m. 
Consolations: 1 p.m. 
Semifinals: 3 p.m. 
Second-Round Consolations: 5 p.m. 
Final-Consolations and Finals: 7 p.m.

Old Dominion swept through the conference in the regular season, going a perfect 6-0 against CAA opponents. Although Old Dominion is not ineligible for the team title this year, the Monarchs' 10 wrestlers will be eligible to compete for the 19 automatic CAA berths.

As noted before, the CAA will be sending 19 wrestlers to the NCAA Wrestling Championship. Including the 10 individual champions from the 2013 CAA Championship. This year, the CAA has been granted three berths apiece at the 133, 141 and 197 weight classes. The champion and runner-up at 149, 157 and 285 will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA's. While granting solely the winner of the 125, 165, 174 and 184-pound tournaments an automatic bid, respectively.

Breaking Down Each Weight Class:

125 - CAA gets 1 Automatic Bid
Hofstra's No. 16 Steve Bonnano is a three-time NCAA qualifier and became an All-American last year after winning the CAA championship at 125. Bannano has an RPI ranking of No. 32 and Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 17. Bannano is currently 14-0 overall and 6-0 in the CAA.

Old Dominion's freshman and nationally ranked No. 17, Rob Deutsch has an RPI of No. 12 and Coaches Panel Ranking of No. 23.

133 - CAA gets 3 Automatic Bids
Old Dominion's No. 26 Scott Festejo will be looking to defend his conference crown at 133 pounds on Saturday. Festejo has an RPI Ranking of No. 22 and Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 26.

Rider's No. 27 Jimmy Morris has an RPI Ranking of No. 23 and Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 28.

Hofstra's No. 28 Jamie Franco was the CAA runner-up and NCAA qualifier last year at 133 pounds. Franco has an RPI Ranking of No. 26 and Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 29.

141 - CAA gets 3 Automatic Bids
Old Dominion's freshman and nationally ranked No. 12, Chris Mecate comes into the 2013 CAA Championship on an eight-match winning-streak. Mecate's last loss came on Jan. 11 at the Virginia Duals. Mecate has an RPI Ranking of No. 10 and Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 15.

Hofstra's No. 13 Luke Vaith was a NCAA qualifier and the CAA champ at 141 pounds last year. Vaith has an RPI Ranking of No. 8 and Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 16.

Drexel's No. 17 Frank Cimato has an RPI Ranking of No. 21 and Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 18.

Boston's Tyler Scotton has an RPI Ranking of No. 28.

Rider's Vinny Fava has an RPI Ranking of No. 30.

149 - CAA gets 2 Automatic Bids
Binghamton's No. 3 Donnie Vinson is a three-time NCAA qualifier and became an All-American last year after placing third at the NCAA's. Vinson won the 149-pound conference tournament and was named the `CAA Wrestler of the Year' last year. This season, Vinson is 27-1 overall, 17-0 in duals and 6-0 in the CAA. Vinson has an RPI Ranking of No. 4 and Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 4.

Old Dominion's freshman and nationally ranked No. 31, Alexander Richardson has an RPI Ranking of No. 31 and Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 26.

Rider's Curt Delia has an RPI Ranking of No. 26.

157 - CAA gets 2 Automatic Bids
Boston's No. 23  Nestor Taffur has an RPI Ranking of No. 19 and Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 24.

Rider's No. 28 Zac Cibula was a NCAA qualifier and CAA champ at 149 pounds in 2011. Cibula has an RPI Ranking of No. 21 and Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 27.

Hofstra's Tyler Banks has a Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 33.

165 - CAA gets 1 Automatic Bid
Rider's No. 16 Ramon Santiago went 6-0 in the CAA this season and has an RPI Ranking of No. 23 and Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 20.

174 - CAA gets 1 Automatic Bid
Hofstra's No. 30 Jermaine John has and RPI Ranking of No. 32.

Old Dominion's Billy Curling is ranked No. 30 in the Coaches' Panel Rankings.

Rider's James Brundage was a NCAA qualifier last year and has an RPI Ranking of No. 25.

184 - CAA gets 1 Automatic Bid
Rider's Ryan Wolfe is 22-10 overall and 5-1 in CAA matches this season. Wolfe has an RPI Ranking of No. 24.

Binghamton's Cody Reed was a NCAA qualifier at 197 pounds last year and has a RPI Ranking of No. 30.

197 - CAA gets 3 Automatic Bids
Binghamton's No. 5 Nate Schiedel is a three-time NCAA qualifier at 184-pounds. Schiedel won the CAA Championship as a freshman in 2010 and was the CAA runner-up the past two seasons. This season, Schiedel is currently 24-2 overall, 17- in duals and 6-0 in CAA matches. Schiedel has an RPI Ranking of No. 18 and Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 5.

Drexel's No. 17 Brandon Palik was the CAA runner-up at 197 pounds last year. Palik has an RPI Ranking of No. 27 and Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 19.

Old Dominion's No. 30 Jacob Henderson has an RPI Ranking of No. 33 and Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 27.

HWT - CAA gets 2 Automatic Bids
Hofstra's No. 22 Paul Snyder was a NCAA qualifier and the CAA heavyweight champion last year. Snyder has an RPI Ranking of No. 24 and Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 25.

Boston's No. 30 Kevin Innis was a NCAA qualifier last year and has an RPI Ranking of No. 28 and Coaches' Panel Ranking of No. 29.
