Hampton, Va. – The Old Dominion University wrestling team comeback fell just short as they lost 17-16 to No. 15-ranked Edinboro in the Quarterfinals at the 2014 Virginia Duals.

ODU fell behind early, trailing by as much as 11-0 after the first three matches. Alexander (Lenny) Richardson helped ODU get on the board with a 5-3 decision win against David Habat.

At 165 pounds, the Monarchs trailed 14-3 in the team score until Devin Geoghegan gave the team a performance that allowed him to win 12-4 and receive a major decision win with the bonus point. Geoghegan would finish 1-1 on the day. Billy Curling (174) followed that with a 5-3 decision win of his own as he finished 2-0 on the day.

One match later, Jack Dechow (184) came out on the mat and won by an 8-5 decision, as Dechow finished 2-0 after seeing his first action since Nov. 17.

ODU needed a victory by Kevin Beazley to give themselves a chance to win the match and Beazley delivered with a 2-0 decision win against Vincent Pickett. This gave Old Dominion their first lead at 16-14.

The match was up to the Heavyweights. Monarch Matt Tourdot went one period with the match being scoreless. Both Tourdot and Edinboro opponent Ernest James scored escapes to send the match into overtime.

ODU picked up wins by Alexander Richardson at 149 pounds, Devin Geoghegan (165), Billy Curling (174), Jack Dechow (184) and Kevin Beazley (197).

No. 4-ranked Chris Mecate wrestled well in his second match of the day, but could only score an escape as No. 1-ranked 141-pounder Mitchell Port (Edinboro) won by a 5-1 decision.
