– The fifth-ranked Old Dominion University sits just three points out of first place after the opening day of action at the 2013 Gill/Dinghy National Championships with 56 points.

Riding their second place finish in the national semifinals, the Monarchs continued to stay hot on Tuesday in the opening day of the national championships as they trail only No. 10 College of Charleston, who leads the 18-team pack with 53 points followed by No. 5 Old Dominion (56), No. 9 Dartmouth (58), No. 3 Georgetown (74) and No. 2 Yale (77) rounding out the top five.

Shifty winds mid-day allowed for competitive sailing before the teams took a break after four races were completed. The afternoon brought rain and light winds and only allowed a fifth race on the day to be completed.

ODU’s A-Division tandem of senior skipper and team captain Dillon Paiva and freshman crew Cooper Paiva are in seventh place with 37 points while fresh off their win in the semifinals, the outstanding racing duo of freshman skipper Esteban Forrer and junior crew Julia Wiesner are currently in first in the B-Division race with 19 points.
