Fifth-Ranked Sailing Monarchs Begin Gill/Dinghy National Championships on Tuesday

NORFOLK, Va. - The fifth-ranked Old Dominion University coed sailing team begins action on Tuesday in the 2013 Gill/Dinghy National Championships in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The three-day event runs Tuesday, May 28 - Thursday, May 30. No. 5 Old Dominion joins No. 1 Stanford, No. 4 Roger Williams, No. 9 Dartmouth, No. 6 Brown, No. 14 Navy, No. 15 South Florida, No. 16 SUNY Maritime and No. 18 Virginia as the Eastern finalists while No. 2 Yale, No. 3 Georgetown, No. 7 Hobart and William Smith, No. 12 MIT, No. 11 St. Mary's (Md.), No. 13 Tufts, No. 8 Boston College, No. 10 College of Charleston and No. 17 Wisconsin represent the Western finalists.
The Monarchs qualified for the event in late April behind their strongest performance of the season as they took second place in the Eastern Division of the ICSA Dinghy Coed National Semifinals. ODU's A-Division tandem of senior skipper and team captain Dillon Paiva along with junior crew Chloe Constants and freshman Crew Cooper Paiva took fourth place with 73 points. ODU's outstanding racing duo of freshman skipper Esteban Forrer and junior crew Julia Wiesner captured the B-Division title with 54 points.
Following their semifinal results, Old Dominion jumped seven spots earlier this month to their highest spot all season long at No. 5 in Sailing World's college rankings, presented by Sperry Top-Sider.
