NORFOLK, Va. - On Friday, October 22, from 12 noon until sunset, the Old Dominion University Intercollegiate Sailing Team is hosting free and open to the public introductory sailing lessons and sailboat rides as part of their Sailapalooza.

The sailing team is using Sailapalooza as a fundraiser for Operation Smile, www.Operationsmile.org. The team members will be collecting financial contributions, travel-size toiletry items, and small stuffed (like beanie babies) animals for "smile bags" for Operation Smile. "Smile bags" are distributed to the young patients after surgery.

Sailaplooza is a public sailing outreach supported by the Intercollegiate Sailing Association to utilize college sailing teams, facilities, and collegiate energy to introduce as many people to the lifetime sport of sailing as possible. In the process, teams hope to build campus awareness for the sailing team, and to foster community and campus relations. The Old Dominion University Sailing team will be using Sailapalooza as a fundraiser for Operation Smile. Old Dominion's head coach Mitch Brindley says, "Sailing is a great way to put a smile on a face."

Operation Smile is a Norfolk, Va. based non-profit organization that repairs childhood facial deformities while building public and private partnerships that advocate for sustainable healthcare systems for children and families. "Together, we create smiles, change lives, heal humanity" (Operation Smile's Mission). For more information about Operation Smile, please visit www.operationsmile.org.

The Sailapalooza will take place at the ODU Sailing Center, located off of Powhatan Avenue next door to Whitehurst Dormitory. The sailing team will be taking people sailing in their fleet of collegiate one and two person sailing dinghies. Experienced and qualified sailors may sail independently. Life jackets, and cool weather sailing gear will be provided; participants should wear shoes, shorts or bathing suit, and a light wind breaker may be needed. Participants should be prepared to get splashed.

All proceeds will go to Operation Smile to help with their mission. A donation is not required to participate.
