ANNAPOLIS, Md. - A very solid weekend for the Old Dominion sailing program was highlighted by a first-place finish from junior skipper Gavin Rudolph at the Laser South #2 Conference Regatta.

Rudolph bested a 12-person field with 46 points, topping Georgetown's Michael Schalka by four points. ODU sophomore skipper Collin Leon claimed third with 58 points. Sophomore Zach Runci ended the regatta in 10th for the Monarchs.

All of the top four racers, including Rudolph and Leon, now qualify to compete in the Carl Van Duyne MAISA Men's Single-Handed Championship at Navy on October 9-10.

Rudolph rattled off 10 straight top-five finishes after the first race to build a commanding lead over the field. Schalka posted a second-place result in the 12th and final race, but Rudolph held off the field with an eighth-place finish. Rudolph had a remarkable six top-three results, including a win in the ninth race.

Leon had nine-top five finishes and a win in the second race, while Runci posted his best result with a third-place finish in the sixth race.

Senior skipper Morgan Wilson led the way for the Lady Monarchs as she claimed fourth at the Faye Bennet MAISA women's singlehanded regatta. Her top-four result qualifies her for the ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championship in St. Petersburg, Fla. on November 5-7.

In 18 races, Wilson had nine top-five's and four wins. The senior had the second most wins in the 18-person field but two finishes outside the top 10 bumped her down. Wilson will look to build on her fifth-place finish at the ICSA Singlehanded National Championships in 2009.

Old Dominion also competed in the St. Mary's Fall Intersectional Regatta this past weekend, earning an 11th-place result.

Stephanie Roble and Emily Reich claimed ninth in the A-Division, while Scott Hoffmann, Dillon Paiva and Jessica Milligan teamed up for 11th in the B-Division. In total, ODU had seven top-five finishes and the duo of Roble and Reich won the third A-Division race.

ODU will participate in three more events from October 2-3. The Monarchs will send boats to the Danmark Trophy Regatta in New London, Conn., the Finger Lake Intersectional held at Hobart/William Smith and the St. Mary's Open hosted by St. Mary's College.
