Lacrosse Releases Schedule For 2014 Season
NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s lacrosse team and head coach Heather Holt announced their schedule for the upcoming 2014 season. The Lady Monarchs will play 10 games on the road and six games on their home turf at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. In 2014, Holt and company will take on three schools that participated in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
Holt exclaimed, “We are very excited about our 2014 game schedule. It consists of some great rivalries, as well as some new opponents from different regions. We have some great challenges ahead that I know our team is ready to take on head-first.”
The Old Dominion lacrosse program will join the Atlantic Sun Conference as an affiliate member in 2014-15; however, the program will compete as an independent in 2013-14. ODU had competed in the Colonial Athletic Association since 1992, winning the conference crown in 1995 and boasting 13 All-Americans with 35 Academic All-Americans.
Holt explained her scheduling strategies, “Each year I try to keep some of our competitive in-state games on the schedule; such as: Longwood, W&M, VA Tech, Richmond and UVA. I also try to keep our fans, families and alumni in mind for each location. When you play the majority of your schedule in locations where you know you will have a large cheering section, it creates an intense game atmosphere for the players and the coaches. We are looking forward to traveling to new destinations this year, as well as returning to familiar sites.”
The Lady Monarchs will open their 2014 season with a two-game home stint, starting on Feb. 21 against Louisville from the Big East. On Feb. 23, Old Dominion will host UC Davis.
ODU then hits the road for two consecutive road games against Stetson on Feb. 27 and at Jacksonville on March 1. Last season, Jacksonville went to the NCAA Tournament after winning the inaugural Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. This will be the second time in school history that Old Dominion will square-off with Jacksonville.
Old Dominion returns home for a showdown with Richmond on March 5, before hitting the road to play at Liberty (March 9) and at Longwood (March 13).
On March 16, the Lady Monarchs will take on St. Joseph’s University at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. ODU defeated St. Joseph’s last season, 9-7, in Philadelphia, Pa. Next, Old Dominion travels to the nation’s capital to play American on March 22. Last year, the Lady Monarchs defeated American, 15-11, in Norfolk, Va.
Life on the road continues for Holt’s team as they face perennial power, UVA, in Charlottesville, Va. on March 26. The University of Virginia advanced to the National Quarterfinals of the 2013 NCAA Tournament before losing (13-9) to eventual National Champion, UNC.
The in-state rivalries do not end there, as the Lady Monarchs look forward to closing out competition in the month of March by welcoming Virginia Tech to Norfolk, Va. on the 29th.
The month of April will start with Old Dominion on the road for three consecutive matchups: Davidson (April 1), Colorado (April 18) and Denver (April 20). In the NCAA Tournament last season, Denver won their First Round matchup against Jacksonville before falling to Florida.
On April 23, ODU will return to Norfolk for their final home game against John Hopkins.
Three days later, the Lady Monarchs conclude their regular season against cross-town rival, William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. on April 26. Old Dominion will be looking to win their third consecutive game against their former conference-foe.
Holt said, “We are very much looking forward to our affiliation with the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2014-2015, however, we are focused on this year’s team, players and schedule. We have a solid group of players returning and some very talented athletes joining our squad. The future success of our program depends on the commitment and focus of our team this year. We are building to be stronger, faster, and better each year; that starts today and I know this team is welcoming the challenge. I agree with our Athletic Director, Wood Selig when he recently stated in the newspaper that ODU’s best days still lie ahead!”
