Bradbury Sixth, Morrell Eighth After Round 1 At C-USA Championships

GULF SHORES, Ala. - ODU junior Kimberley Bradbury (Derbyshire, England) fired 73 and senior Samantha Morrell (North Kingstown, RI.) a 74 and are both in the top 10 after one round of the Conference USA Women's Golf Championships at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club in Gulf Shores, AL. As a team, the Lady Monarchs are seventh with a 305. Bradbury is just three strokes behind the overall leader.

No. 20 Tulane holds a two-stroke lead in the team race after the opening round of the 2013 Conference USA Golf Championships. East Carolina golfers Nico Engstroem Skaug and Frida Gustafsson Spang share the lead at 2- (70) under par after 18 holes on the par-72 6,162-yard course.

Tulane's Silvia Garces shot a 1-under 71 and was the only other golfer to shoot better than par during Monday's opening round. Two players, SMU's Felicia Espericueta and Tulane's Emily Penttila, fired rounds of even par.

Tulane golfers combined to shoot 291 for the round and 3-over par. Four Green Wave golfers hold top-10 spots after the first 18 holes, including Garces, Penttila, Madison Opfer (74 - t8th) and Gemma Dryburgh (74 - t8th). Defending individual medalist Maribel Lopez Porras shot a 75 during the first round and sits five shots behind the leaders, tied for 14th.

No. 48 East Carolina is in second place after an opening round 293. In addition to the co-leaders, Fanny Wolte fired a 74 and is tied for 8th place.

Teams sitting in third through seventh place are separated by just four strokes, with No. 44 UCF holding a one-shot edge over No. 33 SMU, 301-302, for third place. Tulsa, the defending team champion, and Memphis are tied after recording rounds of 304. Old Dominion, playing in its first C-USA Women's Golf Championship, is one shot behind at 305.

The first groups in Tuesday's second round will tee off at 7:45 a.m. CDT. Memphis, Tulsa and SMU will start on hole No. 1, with Tulane, East Carolina and UCF following off the No. 1 tee at 8:35 a.m. Old Dominion, Southern Miss and UTEP will begin on No. 10 at 7:45 a.m., while UAB and Marshall will go off No. 10 at 8:35 a.m. The winner of the C-USA Championship will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals.
