Two-Time State Champion Samantha Morrell Signs With Lady Monarchs

NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion University women's golf coach Pat Kotten announced today that Samantha Morrell (North Kingstown, RI), the two-time Rhode Island Girls All-State Champion signed a letter of intent to play for the Lady Monarchs beginning the 2009-10 season.

Morrell, currently has a 37 stroke average for North Kingstown High School which is the second lowest state wide among boys and Girls. In 2008 she was first team All-State Girls Champion, First Team All-State Boys Tournament with a fourth place finish, and Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT) second team All-American. She capped off another great season by repeating as the Rhode Island Interscholastic League girls state Champion with a five-stroke margin at the Point Judith Country Club. She shot a 76.

In 2007, Morrell was Girl's All-State Medalist First Team All-Division and sixth place Boy's All-State Championship First Team All-Division after shooting a 156. Since June of 2007, Morrell has eight first places, 19 top five finishes.

In national tournaments she won the FCWT New England Open at Newport National and lost in a playoff at the FCWT Red Tail Open. In regional tournaments, Morrell won the Junior tri-State Matches at Hop Meadow in Connecticut, took second at the New England Regional High School Championship with a 71, lost in a playoff at the US Challenge Cup World Series of Junior Golf at Triggs, RI., took second at Westfield Regional.

"Samantha has vast local, regional and national experience," said ODU head coach Pat Kotten. "She has won several tournaments and competed against the best junior players in the country. Most of all, Samantha has the drive, desire and heart to succeed at every level she has played. Samantha is going to be a special Lady Monarch."

Morrell is a member of the National Honor Society and earned Principal's honors for all four quarters. She enjoys foreign languages and received awards in both Spanish and French for 90-plus average all year. She also plays the piano and enjoys the classics. Morrell is the daughter of Francesca and Dennis.
