NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University football practice for the fifth time this camp, capping the week with a helmet only practice before dressing in full pads tomorrow.
Today’s workout focused on special teams, primarily working on the kickoff return unit. The practice featured nine periods of individual practice time with the respective position coaches.
Comments from Coach Wilder:
“I have been very pleased with the first four days of practice. Particularly yesterday’s practice when we were in uppers, it felt like it was a game. We got 50 reps a team and it was very competitive. So the fact that we had a good practice and we had 36 guys that had finals. Last night we were missing 30 guys from the team meeting because they were still in class taking finals and we have 33 more missing this morning.”
“We have guys hustling to get out of here for their 9 a.m. classes, so we cut this one back a bit and let the guys sleep in an extra hour. So instead of a 4:30 a.m. wakeup call they had a 5:30 a.m. wakeup call and there was a roar in the team meeting last night when I told them that.”
“The defense was doing some two back tight-end personnel because they don’t get that from our offense, yet we are going to see that from our opponents, so we focused on introducing that the technique of that, how we defend against it and how we get lined up to that.”
On tomorrows practice:
“The morning we will have 16, five minute periods, but there will be an emphasis, because of full pads, we will do a couple team sessions that will be tackle football where it will be game like situations. Then in the afternoon it will be similar to today where they will have the helmets and spiders on. It will be a special teams focus and will be 12 periods and nine of them will be focused on special teams. So a double day tomorrow and that really signifies the start of camp when you have a double session.”
