NORFOLK, Va. – The Monarchs worked out for about an hour and a half on Monday morning. Starting off the week with a two-a-day, ODU worked out in helmets this morning before a scrimmage later in the day.
The focus this morning continued with special teams in the areas of kickoff returns, punt and punt return.
Today’s scrimmage is closed to the public but fans can come back to ODUSports.com for highlights, interviews and photos.
Comments from Coach Wilder:
On today’s first practice: “We’ve got eight practices in six days in week two, it is a critical week. It is moving week for a college football team, talking about depth charts establishing, particularly with all the new players out here. I Talked to them about that, that this is moving week and a lot is going to happen to help determine the 70 man travel roster.”
“A lot of special teams work that we got accomplished, knowing that tonight we are coming back and will have about an 80 play scrimmage, so we wanted to get some work in on special teams.”
On tonight’s scrimmage: “Primarily what we do that is different than other schools is that we are not taking a hard look at the ones. We are not taking a look at the guys that we already know can play, the veteran players that established themselves as good college football players. We are looking at the twos, the threes, the newer players. They’re going to get a majority of the work tonight, because we are trying to establish that travel roster and find out who those 70 guys are. It is critical to get that because the sooner we know that then the better we can establish depth on special teams and give reps in practice to guys that are going to be on that travel squad.”
