Monarch Football Update: Sophomore Class Breakdown

NORFOLK, Va. - With the spring semester over, the 2013 regular-season opener at East Carolina is just 87 days away. With that in mind, ODUSports.com breaks down the returning players on the roster. Last week we took a look at the juniors, this week we look at the sophomore class.
Troy Butler - Offensive Line - Chesapeake, Va./Hickory
Butler developed strength in ODU's off-season conditioning program and had a solid spring season. He is listed as the starting center entering fall camp.
Galen Evans - Defensive Line - Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School
One of eight true freshmen to play for the Monarchs last season, five of which saw action on the defensive side oft the ball. He recorded 16 tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks in 2012. He notched his first career sack against Campbell and also recorded one against Georgia State.
Evans was injured in the final regular season game of the season at James Madison and sat out spring practice, but is expected to be ready for fall camp starting in August.
Andrew Everett - Defensive Line - Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill
A strong contributor on both the defensive line and on special teams, Everett joined>Galen Evans as the only true freshmen to take snaps on the defensive line in 2012. The Georgia native registered 19 tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles on the year, including a season-best four tackles and a sack against Duquesne and three tackles and a sack in the win over New Hampshire.
Everett had a strong spring and heads into fall camp listed at No. 1 on the depth chart at defensive end.
Malique Johnson - Safety - Glen Burnie, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School
Johnson was one of two freshmen safeties to see playing time in the secondary for ODU, joining fellow first-year player Fellonte Misher in the secondary. Johnson also excelled on special teams for the Monarchs.
Johnson will look for an increase in playing time in 2013, as well as look to continue to make key special teams plays for the Monarchs.
Akil Jones - Corner Back - Fairfax, Va./Oakton
Jones redshirted in 2011 and played in four games as a redshirt freshman in 2012, breaking up one pass.
Mike Lennox - Linebacker - Bristow, Va./Brentsville
Lennox earned playing time via special teams in 2012. He played in all 13 games, appearing on special teams and also playing linebacker against Georgia State and recording one tackle.
Rob Mahan - Linebacker - Pennsauken, N.J./Winslow Township
Mahan appeared in five games in 2012 after redshirting in 2011. He had seven tackles and one tackle for loss.
With the loss of four-year starter Craig Wilkins, Mahan will fight for a starting position at linebacker.
Connor Mewbourne - Offensive Line - Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial
Mewbourne played in nine games as a redshirt freshman, playing special teams and also earned some spot duty at guard.
Heading into his redshirt sophomore campaign, Mewbourne is currently listed as the starter at left guard.
Anderson Miller - Defensive Line - Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial
Miller was one of six true freshmen to play for the Monarchs. He played in 11 games on the year, mostly special teams, recording five tackles.
The Virginia Beach native received CAA Academic All-Conference honors.
Fellonte Misher - Safety - Washington, D.C. - Coolidge
Played in 12 games, recording his first career start at Richmond. A native of Washinton D.C., Misher had 15 tackles and three pass breakups, which was tied for second on the team. He notched a career-best five tackles in the playoff victory over Coastal Carolina.
Ricky Segers - Kicker - Glen Allen, Va./Henrico
Appeared in one game on the year, kicking a pair of extra points in the 53-27 victory at Georgia State. Is second on the depth chart to senior all-conference kicker, Jarod Brown.
Kirk Spellman - Wide Receiver - Chesapeake, Va./Indian River
Spellman joined an impressive receiving crew in 2012, catching 20 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown. He caught a career-best five passes in the season-opener against Duquesne and hauled in three catches for 63 yards and a TD versus Villanova.
Caleb Taylor - Linebacker - Hampton, Va./Phoebus/Virginia
A transfer from the University of Virginia, Taylor earned a starting spot after the fourth game of the year and took off, finishing second on the team with 87 tackles and tying for a team best with 13.5 tackles for loss.
Taylor led the team in single-game tackles four times, including a career-best 14 tackles in the FCS Quarterfinals against Georgia Southern. He recorded a team-high 11 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in the regular-season finale at James Madison.
After a standout freshman season and the graduation of Craig Wilkins, ODU will look for another solid season from Taylor.
Harvey Taylor - Running Back - Ridgeway, Va./Magna Vista
Taylor finished the season with 104 yards rushing and a touchdown. He scored his first career touchdown against Duquesne and led the squad in rushing with 76 yards on nine carries in the win over Campbell.
Aquante Thornton - Wide Receiver - Chesapeake, Va./Indian River
Thornton played in two games in 2012. In a very deep position, Thornton will push for playing time and add depth to the wide receiver position in 2013.
