NORFOLK, VA (Sept. 11) - Old Dominion senior midfielder Jessalyn Martin (Richmond,VA) scored two first-half goals as sophomore goalkeeper Tonya Dedmond (NorthPotomac, MD) made eight saves to shutdown upstart Virginia Tech, 2-0. The LadyMonarchs improve to 3-2-0 on the season, while Tech falls to 3-1-0.

Martin got Old Dominion on the board in the 11th minute of play when she headed a Jen Henley (Chalfont, PA) pass off the crossbar to put the Lady Monarchs up, 1-0. Martin scored 12 minutes later on a 15-yard unassisted blast into the back of the net, putting Old Dominion up 2-0.

Both teams had several scoring opportunities in the first half as Old Dominion missed two open netters and Virginia Tech had a goal nullified by a foul and two blasts that were headed for the back of the net if not for finger-tip saves by Dedmond. At the half, the Hokies held a slight 10-9 lead in shots on goal.

In the second half it was much more of a defensive battle as Old Dominion was able to fire off six shots to the Hokies four, but neither team was able to score a goal. Hokie keeper Karen Crowley had six saves in 67 minutes of play before being replaced by Shannon Janko. Dedmond?s shutout was the second of the season and of her career.

The Lady Monarchs return to action on Tuesday night as they host #21 William and Mary at 7:30 pm.
