CAA RECOGNIZES FALL SPORT SCHOLAR ATHLETE AWARD WINNERS

RICHMOND, VA- Old Dominion's Janelle Engle (Mount Joy, PA.) and Laura Beeman (Chalfont, PA) are among the six student-athletes who have been honored by the Colonial Athletic Association as recipients of the CAA Scholar-Athlete Award for the fall sports season.

The conference honors a Scholar-Athlete in each of its 21 championship sports. Nominees for the award must be a starter or important reserve on their team and must meet the Academic All-America minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.20. The winners were selected by a vote of the sports information directors at each CAA institution.

Earning the CAA Scholar-Athlete Award in the fall sports were: Janelle Engle of Old Dominion in field hockey, Laura Beeman of Old Dominion in women's soccer, Keith Bechtol of William & Mary in men's cross country, Meghan Bishop of William & Mary in women's cross country, Matt Haney of Delaware in men's soccer, and Tessa Sphar of Hofstra in volleyball.

Here is a brief biographical sketch on the ODU award winners, both of whom have earned cumulative grade point averages of 3.6 or above.

FIELD HOCKEY

Janelle Engle, Sr., Mt. Joy, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite

Engle is a three-time member of the NFHCA Academic Honor Roll and was chosen to the USA Today All-USA College Academic Team. A music education major, Engle is first violinist in the Diehn String Quartet and concertmaster of the ODU Symphony. On the field, Engle was selected as the 2005 CAA field hockey Player of the Year, earned first team All-South Region honors for the second year in a row and was named to the NFHCA All-America first team. She led the CAA with 20 goals, and was also second in points (50) and eighth in assists (10) on a Lady Monarchs' squad that captured the CAA title and advanced to the NCAA Final Four.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Laura Beeman, Sr., Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West

Beeman is a counseling major who has been a constant on the ODU Dean's List and is a three-time recipient of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award. She was selected as the CAA women's soccer Player of the Year in 2005 after leading the conference and ranking among the top 20 nationally with 16 goals and 35 points. Beeman was chosen to the NSCAA All Mid-Atlantic second team and the Soccer Buzz All-Region squad, and earned All-CAA accolades for the third year in a row. She finished her career ranked second in career goals and points at ODU.
