Swedish CEO Peter Yngwe ('84)- To Speak To Economics Club Of Hampton Roads
March 7, 2013
Thirty years ago, he was a business student and varsity soccer player at Old Dominion. Now, Peter Yngwe is president and CEO of AB Svensk Exportkredit/Swedish Export Credit Corp., and is regarded as one of the top financial minds in Europe.
Yngwe will be the next speaker for the Economics Club of Hampton Roads at noon Wednesday, March 20, at the Marriott Norfolk Waterside. He will give an insider's view of the state of the euro, at a time of worldwide financial challenges. The event is free for members of the Economics Club of Hampton Roads, and $40 for non-members.
Prior to assuming his current position, Yngwe served as treasurer and head of the finance department and in various other capacities with the Export Credit Corp. since joining the firm in 1984. SEK provides customized financial solutions to the Swedish export industry.
Yngwe credits his time at ODU, where he earned both a B.S. in finance and an M.B.A., as pivotal to his career.
"Even if the U.S. and Sweden are both Western countries, they differ in many ways," he said in an interview for the ODU alumni magazine in 2002. "You learn a language, get used to - and hopefully learn - a different culture, meet new and exciting people, experience new things, learn to view life a little differently, and get a somewhat different education than you would have received in your home country."
Yngwe, who had already started his pursuit of a higher education degree in his native Sweden, took full advantage of his experience at Old Dominion, earning two degrees in three years and playing collegiate soccer.
Yngwe is a recipient of the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the ODU Alumni Association, and holds an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from his alma mater.
The Economics Club of Hampton Roads is an organization for business and government executives and community leaders who share an interest in the practical implications of economic principles, trends and events. It was established in 1991 as a community service by former ODU President James V. Koch, and is administered by the dean of the College of Business and Public Administration, under the supervision of an elected board.
