Monarchs Open With Exhibition Match Against American On Saturday

NORFOLK, VA-- Fans can get their first look at the 2006 Soccer Monarchs when they host American University Saturday at 6 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Stadium. ODU is pre-season No.20 by College Soccer News, and the CAA coaches picked the Monarchs as the favorites to win the league.

Leading the Monarch returnees are first team All-CAA senior midfielder Edson Elcock, second team All-CAA junior defender David Horst,sophomore midfielder Trevor Banks, the 2005 Rookie of the Year, and Yomby William, a member of the CAA All-Rookie team.

ODU will also debut newcomers: Sean Sigrist (GK, Wautwatosa, WI.), Alex Silver (MF, Montclair, VA.), Steffen Sommerstad (F,Norway), Amir Shihata (MF, Va. Beach, VA.), Zachary Waters (MF, Stafford, VA.), Zachary Kinney (F, Portland, TX), Dylan Montambo (MF/D, Chesapeake, VA.), Evan Newton, (GK, Virginia Beach, VA.), Ambane Emmanuel (F, Cameroon), and Nane Fils (MF, Cameroon).

American University Eagles, Members of the Patriot League are coached by Todd West. AU was 7-10-1 overall and 5-2, tied for first in the league. The Eagles return there top four scorers from a year ago which include Garth Juckem (6 gls, 5 ast), Larry Mark (5 gls, 4 ast) and Sal Cacavale (4 gls, 4ast).

ODU travels to Virginia Tech next weekend for an exhibition contest before hosting defending NCAA Champion Maryland on Aug. 25th in the home and season opener.
