Monarchs Drop Dukes of James Madison, 2-0
Oct. 14, 2007
NORFOLK, Va. -- The ODU Monarchs improved to 4-0 in the CAA with a 2-0 win over the Dukes of James Madison (2-7-2, 1-3-0) on Sunday. Sophomore Ambane Emmanuel scored the gamewinner with under three minutes left in the first half on a perfect pass from freshman T.J. Beaulieu. Sophomore goalkeeper Evan Newton made three phenomenal diving saves in the game as he pitched his sixth shutout of the season.
Early in the first half, ODU had taken control offensively, launching 10 shots in the frame. However, JMU would be awarded a penalty kick in the 15th minute of play on a yellow card foul by the keeper Evan Newton. The PK would be taken by Kyle Morsink and he fired a good one toward the left side, but Newton would deny him with a sensational diving stop.
The ODU defense only allowed two shots in the first half. It was late in the half, with just 2:37 remaining, when Ambane Emmanuel would connect from just inside the box. Freshman T.J. Beaulieu controlled the ball on the right side of the field and Emmanuel used his speed to come from behind the ball and past the JMU defensive line as Beaulieu scooted the pass through to him. It was his second goal on the season.
For much of the second half, the story was the same as the first, with ODU controlling the offensive side of the field. JMU would pick up the intensity late and manage a flurry of shots, forcing Newton to make two more diving saves.
The Monarchs would capitalize in transition, though, late in the game to seal the victory. Trevor Banks received the ball in the left corner and, rather than making the long cross, went short to Dylan Montambo who quickly flicked it to A.J. Kulp. The senior wasted no time and fired the shot into the lower right corner for the score. It was the first goal of the season for the senior captain.
Both teams took five shots on-goal as ODU outshot the Dukes 18-10. Newton made four saves while posting the shutout in the ODU goalmouth while the Dukes keeper, Ken Manahan made three saves while allowing the two goals.
ODU will hit the road for a pair against George Mason and Towson next weekend. Kick-off against the Patriots on Friday night is set for 7:00 pm.
