George Mason Defeats #2 ODU
Nov. 2, 2003
FAIRFAX, VA.-Junior Matt Mendy scored in the 51st minute to give the George Mason Patriots a 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Monarchs of Old Dominion, ranked second by Soccer America, third by Soccer Times and College SoccerNews and fourth by the NSCAA. It was the Monarchs second straight loss to drop them to 14-2 overall and 6-2 in the CAA. GMU is now 10-4-5 overall and 4-1-3 in the CAA.
Mendy's goal came after a scramble in front of the Old Dominion goal. A long throw-in from the right side by Patriot senior Keith Nakai was cleared out of the penalty area by the ODU defense, but senior Mirza Kruspahic chipped the ball back into the area to Mendy, who headed it in from 10-yards away inside the right post.
ODU turned up the pressure over the last 20 minutes of play, and had several scoring opportunities, including a blistering 20-yard shot by Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) that was saved by Patriot junior goalkeeper John O'Hara. Josh Hill (Va.Beach, VA.) also had a shot that was cleared by the GMU defense with less than five minutes left.
O'Hara had four saves in posting his ninth shutout and third in a row, while ODU goalkeeper, Sam Cameron had two saves. ODU outshot GMU 13-7. The Monarchs, who are now in second place behind 17th ranked VCU (10-4/8-1) in the CAA finish the regular season next Saturday night at William and Mary.
