NORFOLK, VA--After running off an eight game unbeaten streak that has featured seven shutout victories and only one goal surrendered, the Old Dominion University Soccer Monarchs have advanced one spot in the NSCAA/adidas coaches' rankings to #2 in the country. ODU's unbeaten streak has run their record to 10-1-2 (5-0-1) on the season, and given them a four-point cushion in the CAA standings. The #2 ranking is the highest for the team since last being ranked #2 on October 6, 2003. The Monarchs are also ranked 6th by Soccer Times, and 7th by College Soccer News and Soccer America.

Senior netminder John Connelly (Rockville, MD) was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week on the strength of back-to-back shutout victories against Northeastern and Hofstra. Connelly has earned seven shutouts in the past eight games, and has a CAA-leading eight on the year. This is his first such honor, and he is the second Monarch to be named to the team this season, Brian Cvilikas (Highlands Ranch, CO) being the other.

Yomby William (Bafoussam, Cameroon),a standout defensive rookie for the Monarchs, suffered a season-ending knee injury last week during practice. William tore the LCL ligament in his left knee along with suffering a fracture inside of his knee. The CAA Co-Rookie of the Week for the week of September 5-11 will undergo surgery on Wednesday October 19th to repair his knee.

The men's soccer team is back in action Friday night as they host rival Virginia Commonwealth at the ODU Soccer Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, the Monarchs will honor their seniors for the annual Senior Day before a conference matchup with James Madison at 1:00 p.m.
