#3 Men's Soccer Host Northeastern Friday Night in First of Four Straight Home Matches
Oct. 13, 2005
NORFOLK, VA--The 3rd ranked Old Dominion University Soccer Monarchs aim to increase their lead in the CAA standings as they take on Northeastern in the first of two weekend conference matches. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. ODU, 8-1-2 (3-0-1) on the season, is ranked 3rd in the country by NSCAA/adidas coaches poll, 8th by Soccer Times, and 9th by Soccer America. Northeastern is a CAA newcomer, and is 1-5-5 so far in 2005.
The Monarchs saw their five-match shutout winning streak snapped on regional television by the Drexel Dragons, tying 1-1. ODU is still riding high on a six-match unbeaten streak and have a three-point lead in the current CAA standings. ODU's Brian Cvilikas (Highlands Ranch, CO) has scored 9 goals this season, and leads the CAA in goals per game, and shots per game. He also ranks 2nd in the CAA in four other statistical categories. Senior goalkeeper John Connelly (Rockville, MD) has given up only one goal in the past six matches, leads the CAA in shutouts, and is 2nd in goals against average (0.64). The Monarch defense, led by senior Trevor McEachron (Woodbridge, VA) and sophomore David Horst (Pine Grove, PA), rank 2nd in the conference in goals allowed and goals against average.
The visiting Huskies of Northeastern come to town with an unbeaten conference mark in their inaugural CAA campaign, having tied their last four matches. ODU and Northeastern have only faced one time, with the Huskies coming out on top 3-2 in 2001. The Huskies leading scorer is sophomore forward Greg Kilkenny, who has tallied four goals and eight points on the year. A stout Northeastern defense has only allowed three goals in the past five matches. Head Coach Brian Ainscough is in his first season with the program, having previously served as head man at Bowdoin and Providence.
The Monarchs return to action Sunday at home against Hofstra in a rematch of last year's CAA championship. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
