About the Commodores
Derek Mason takes over as head coach after James Franklin left for Penn State. Mason, in his first year as a head coach, was the defensive coordinator at Stanford since 2011, where had three-straight top-15 ranked defenses with the Cardinal.
Vanderbilt returns two of their top three leading rushers in Jerron Seymour and Brian Kimbrow. Seymour led the team with 716 yards and 14 touchdowns while Kimbrow rushed for 341 yards and three scores.
The Commodores graduated starting quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels, but return sophomore Patton Robinette. Robinette made three starts and played in 10 games in 2013, completing 46-of-88 passes for 642 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed 71 times for 214 yards and seven scores.
Vanderbilt graduated its top two receivers in Jordan Matthews and Jonathan Krause. Matthews caught 112 passes for 1,477 yards and seven TD’s. Seymour is the leading returning receiver with 19 catches for 126 yards.
Darreon Herring is the leading returning tackler with 84 stops and three tackles for loss.
Vanderbilt had 15 players on an NFL roster for the 2013 season, including Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, Green Bay Packers cornerback Casey Hayward, Bears wide receiver Earl Bennett and St. Louis Rams offensive lineman, Chris Williams. Cutler and Williams were both first round picks.
In a season of firsts, this will be the first-ever SEC contest for the Monarchs. It will be the first game for ODU in November, a good one for the Monarchs in the past; ODU is 14-1 all-time in the month of November.
