ODUSports.com takes a deeper look into ODU’s 41-28 victory over Hampton.
Sophomore running back Gerard Johnson carried 22 times on Saturday, easily surpassing his previous high of 17 last year at Norfolk State. Johnson rushed for 137 yards, the second-highest total of his career and his second-straight 100-yard rushing game. He rushed for 143 last year at UNC.
Taylor Heinicke moved into 26th place in the career FBS passing yards charts with 11, 746 yards. He passed Brady Quinn and Russell Wilson, and sits just 83-yards behind 25th place Chase Holbrook of New Mexico State (2005-08).
The six sacks by the defense tied for the most in school history. It was the fourth time that the ODU defense produced six sacks in a game and the first time since 2012 against Coastal Carolina in the FCS Playoffs. Poncho Barnwell led the way with 1.5 sacks.
Freshman Isaiah Worthy became just the second Monarch to recover two fumbles in one game, joining former Monarch all-time leading tackler Craig Wilkins. Wilkins recovered two fumbles against Georgia State in 2010.
Sophomore Zach Pascal had eight catches for 99-yards and just missed his second career 100-yard receiving game. Senior Antonio Vaughan had 79-yards receiving and is just 12 yards from moving into second on the career list.
Sophomore Nick England, a transfer from FIU and high school teammate of Heinicke, caught four passes for 39 yards from his former high school quarterback. He caught all four passes on ODU’s first drive of the game.
True freshmen Marques Little and Vincent Lowe earned their first receptions as college players. Little had one catch for 18 yards while Lowe had two for eight yards and also carried once for 12 yards.
ODU played nine true freshmen on Saturday; Vincent Lowe, Jonathan Duhart, Christian Byrum, Brandon Simmons, Ray Lawry, Jarrett Cervi, Isaiah Worthy, Darius Garcia and Marques Little. Lowe started the game at running back.
Six players started for the first time in an ODU uniform, three on offense, three on defense. Lowe at running back, Ely Anderson at left tackle and Tyler Compton at right guard for the offense. Malik Gumbs at defensive tackles, TJ Ricks at linebacker and Phil Paulhill at safety.
Old Dominion travels to NC State on Saturday, Sept. 6 for a 6 p.m. kickoff. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
