Newsom Tied For 14th At C-USA Championships

TEXARKANA, Ark. - ODU freshman Ashton Newsom is tied for 14th after one round at the Conference USA Men's Golf Championships at the par 72, 6,935-yard Texarkana Country Club. As a team, the Monarchs shot 299 and are in 12th place.

A pair of SMU Mustangs carding two of the four top performances of the day, SMU jumped out to an early seven-stroke lead over second-place UCF on day one of the 2013 C-USA Men's Golf Championship.

ODU's Newsom shot 72, four shots behind the leaders while Junior John Dawson shot 74. SMU senior Mario Clemens and freshman Bryson Dechambeau both finished the day four-under, and are tied atop the leaderboard with Houston junior Curtis Reed and UTEP sophomore Martin Simonsen at 68. Clemens, Dechambeau and Reed each carded five birdies on the day, while Simonsen tallied six. Reed was also one of three Cougars to eagle on the morning as he tallied his on the par-5 No. 7 hole. UH sophomores Kyle Pilgrim (17) and Roman Robledo (16) also eagled.

Memphis junior Grant Milner is currently one stroke behind the leaders to hold onto fifth place. Juniors Kyle Wilshire of UCF, Mark Mumford of Tulsa, Landon Michelson of Rice and SMU sophomore Harry Higgs finished two-under for the day and to tie all for sixth place entering Monday's second round.

Monday play will begin at a new time, with the first groups teeing off at 8:30 a.m. CDT. UTEP, Memphis and Marshall will start at 8:30 off of No. 1 as the fourth through sixth place teams, respectively. Those trios will be followed by SMU, UCF and Houston, beginning at 9:20 a.m. Rice, East Carolina and affiliate member Old Dominion will start on No. 10 at 8:30 a.m., while Southern Miss, UAB and Tulsa will tee off No. 10 beginning at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday's final round will tee off at 8 a.m. CDT. The winner of the C-USA Championship receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
