Nov. 18, 2004
NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion University head coach Murray Rudisill announced that Matthew Watson (Chesapeake, VA.) of Western Branch High School has signed a letter-of-intent for the 2005-06 season. Watson placed second at the Virginia High School League State Championships in 2002 & 2004.
Watson, a 6-1, 190-pounder has a 69.4 scoring average. He won the regional championships by eight strokes and finished second in the state championships and third at the districts.
"I have been watching Matt's progress as a junior golfer for a number of years and have seen his overall game improve and mature," said Rudisill. "Matt is one of the top junior golfers in the state and we are very pleased that he will be with us at ODU for his college career. He has the ability to shoot some very low scores and he will have an immediate impact on our golf team as a freshman. He is not afraid to shoot low scores and he has had a tremendous amount of tournament experience which will help him a great deal to be ready for college golf.
Watson finished second in the state championships as a sophomore, and won the regional and district titles. As a junior, he was third in the district and regional championships. Watson competed in the prestigious Scott Robertson Memorial and made the cut at the Virginia State Open and Virginia State Amateur. In the Amateur, he lost in the first round of match play.
"I was really impressed with coach Rudisill and the success of the Old Dominion program," said Watson who is the son of Nola and Tom Watson.
ODU has finished in the top three of the CAA in four of the last five seasons. ODU captured the league title in 2003, finished second in 2001 and 2004 and third in 2000.
