NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion University head men's golf coach Murray Rudisill announced the signing of three recruits for the 2005-06 season. Matthew Rendell (Reading, England), Chris Barach (Niskayuna, NY.) and Jeff Long (Centreville, VA.) signed letters of intent. They join Matthew Watson (Chesapeake, VA.), who signed in the fall as next year's newcomers.

"With Matt Watson's signing in the fall and the three new golfers for the spring, this group of young men represent the best freshman class that we have recruited in many years," said head coach Murray Rudisill. "The new golf course opening this summer adjacent to the campus has been a real positive influence with recruits who come to visit."

Matthew Rendell has already broken many of former Monarch standout Geoff Harris' ('03) records (Harris was a two-time CAA Player of the Year). The 5-10 native of Reading, England recorded his lowest round of 64 at the Reading Golf Club, breaking Harris' mark. Rendell won the England State Under 21 title and the Penfold trophy by a record nine shots. He is currently a member of the England Training squad. The son of Linda and Peter Rendell, he plans to major in sports management at ODU.

"We are pleased to sign Matthew, who has come from the same area of England as Geoff Harris and Chris Piercy," said Rudisill. " Matthew has had great training in the British system and recently finished 13th in the Prestigious Peter McEvoy championship. His record is outstanding and he has broken a number of scoring records that were previously held by Geoff Harris."

Chris Barach placed fourth and second in the New York State Championships the past two years at Niskayuna High School. He competed in five AJGA tournament events, placing fourth in Pittsburgh, and in the top 20 in Hartford and Rye, NY. He will be competing in the U.S. Open qualifier at Wolfert Country Club in Albany, NY. The 6-0, 165 pounder is the son of Bruce and Irene Barach and plans to major in political science at ODU.

"Chris is another great player out of New York State," said Rudisill. "He is long and strong and has lots of good finishes in national and state championships. He should have an immediate impact on the starting line-up next fall."

Jeff Long is a first team All-State, All-District and All-Northern region selection. He finished ninth in the VSGA state championships, and 12th in the Virginia High School State Championships. He helped lead Westfield High School to a fourth place finish in the Virginia High School AAA championships. His best round was a 67 at the Herndon Invitational. The son of John and Jessica plans to major in business at ODU.

"It is great to get another golfer from Northern Virginia," (ODU Hall of Famer and All-American Jon Hurst '91 came out of the same area.) said Rudisill. "Jeff has played very solid golf in a number of regional and state tournaments. He is a very steady player who will add to the depth of talent for next year.

In the fall, the Monarchs inked Matthew Watson of Western Branch High School. Watson placed second at the Virginia High School League State Championships in 2002 and 2004. The 6-1, 190-pounder has a 69.4 scoring average. He won the regional championships by eight strokes and finished second in the state championships and third at the districts.
