Ashton Newsom and Seth Sweet Sign With ODU's Golf Program

NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion University men's golf coach Murray Rudisill announced today the signing of TCIS Medalist Ashton Newsom (Greenbrier Christian - Chesapeake, VA.) and two-time Maine High School State Champion Seth Sweet (Madison High, ME.) to letters of intent.

Newsom, the son of Tim Newsom, longtime pro at Elizabeth Manor and now director of golf at Riverfront golf club captured the medalist honors last spring at the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools Championships, playing for Greenbrier Christian High School. Newsom also tied for fifth at the prestigious 2011 Eastern Amateur. In 2010, Newsom carded a 66 to win the cadet Division of the Eastern Am, and was the 2008 Club Champion at Riverfront. Newsom also placed 21st at the 2011 VSGA junior stroke play championships.

"I know the team, they have a great golf facility, and head coach Rudisill is one of the best. It's also an opportunity to stay close to home." - Ashton Newsom.

The son of Tim and Leigh Anne Newsome, Ashton is looking at majoring in either accounting or business at ODU.

Seth Sweet was the 2009 New England junior champion and two-time Maine High School State Champion, winning in 2010 and finishing at two-under par 70 to capture the 2011 state crown. Sweet also played in the US junior Amateur on the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain in Bremerton, Washington where he tied for 55th and then took fourth at the Maine Amateur.

"Coach Rudisill really impressed me along with the facility on campus and the strong schedule ODU plays Is what got my interest. I am also good friends with current Monarch Jamison Randall who is from the Rhode Island area. " - Seth Sweet.

The son of Kimberley and Danny Sweet, Seth plans to major in sports management at ODU.

"Both players will have an immediate impact on our team. They will definitely be challenging the Other players for a position in our starting line-up next fall."- ODU head coach Murray Rudisll.
