NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University men’s tennis team will host three different dual matches throughout this weekend at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. On Sunday, January 26, ODU will square off against Norfolk State (9:00 a.m.) and then Morgan State (2:30 p.m.).

The Tennis Monarchs are coming off their first competition of the year 2014 and spring season last weekend, in which ODU swept the Bison from Howard University, 7-0. All three double’s teams for Old Dominion, won their matches 6-1, while all six Monarchs won their single’s matches in straight sets.

MEET THE MONARCH’S OPPONENTS
Richmond Spiders (1-1, 0-1) – Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
Coach Ben Johnson joined the Spider’s coaching staff in July of 2010, after a four-year stint as the men's assistant coach at Davidson. Last season under Johnson’s direction, U of R racked up 13 wins, while three players were recognized as all conference.

The Spiders are led by redshirt-junior Ethan Dunbar, an All-Conference First Team selection, who finished 15-9 last season at No. 1 singles. Ethan’s brother, Jacob Dunbar, is also a member of the Richmond men’s tennis roster.

U of R defeated the Temple Owls, 4-1, on Saturday, when Alex Hahn secured the final single’s point as he rallied back for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Filip Stipcic. On the same day that the Spiders took down Temple, they also lost 5-0 to VCU.

Norfolk State Spartans – Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
Nate Feldman, the reigning MEAC Tennis Coach of the Year, led his Spartans to a 12-8 overall record last year. For the first time in school history, NSU won a share of the regular season title last season, where they eventually lost in the semi-finals of the MEAC Tournament. Igor Braga, a junior from Brazil, was named to the ITA All-Academic Team in 2013.

Norfolk State was picked to finish No. 2 in the MEAC Preseason Poll. So far this season, NSU has lost to William and Mary, 5-2. Robin Riethmueller competed at the No. 2 singles position for the Spartans and posted a 3-6, 6-5(3), 1-0 (10-4) victory over W&M’s Will Juggins. In the No. 6 spot, NSU’s Daniel Grauel defeated Scott Huang 4-6, 6-5, 1-0 (10-7).

Morgan State Bears – Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Last season, the Bears won their first MEAC divisional title after posting an undefeated conference record (4-0) and going 5-17 overall. Duk Young-Park, who was a first-team All-MEAC selection last season, finished the regular season with a team-best 7-3 record at No. 1 singles, and went 10-9 overall. Morgan State went 13-4 in doubles record last season, before being upset by Bethune-Cookman in the first round of the MEAC Tournament
