Three ODU teams recognized by NCAA for APR Performance

NORFOLK - Three Old Dominion University athletic programs were recognized for being among the top 10 per cent of all athletic programs achieving superior Academic Progress Rate marks today by the NCAA.  Of the three, men’s tennis and women’s golf were recognized for earning a perfect score of 1000 in the latest NCAA Division I APR announcement while women’s soccer program was honored for their outstanding performance of a multi-year APR of 997.

The latest APR data compiled the retention and eligibility rates for the 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years. ODU’s women’s golf program has been honored for three consecutive years with a perfect score, while this is the first year that other Monarch sport teams have achieved the national recognition level by the NCAA for their academic performance.

“We are extremely pleased to have three teams recognized by the NCAA for achieving the honor of being among the nation’s top 10 per cent of APR scores among all the Division I schools,” says ODU athletic director Dr. Wood Selig. “The academic success of the men’s tennis and women’s golf programs achieving a perfect score and the women’s soccer program achieving a near perfect score is a testament to the commitment our coaches, academic advisors and staff have made to the academic progress and graduation of all of our student athletes.”

Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR).  This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.  Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship.  The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

ODU led all Conference USA members this spring with 240 student athletes, representing all 18 sports, earning the Commissioner’s Honor Roll recognition with a 3.0 or higher, and 41 were recognized as Academic Medal recipients with GPA’s of a 3.75 or higher.

Additional information regarding the APR performance of all Division I members and individual teams will be released by the NCAA on May 14.
