Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season Sweeping Winthrop

RICHMOND, Va. - The Old Dominion men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule on Saturday sweeping Winthrop with a 7-0 victory.
Five of the six Monarchs in singles collected wins in straight sets.
Junior Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Rodrgio Santos at No. 2 singles. Sophomore Eidy Igarshi (São José do Rio Preto, Brazil), ranked 90th in the most recent ITA singles poll, defeated Jorge Padilla, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Newcomer Alexsander Seleznev (Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic) made his Monarch debut giving up only one game in his 6-0, 6-1 victory over Arthur Takahashi. Nate Grover (Suffolk, Va.), at No. 5 singles, took home a 7-6, 6-3 win over Alejandro Portugal. Additionally, sophomore Rodrigo Souza (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) defeated Thiago Barbosa at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
Harel Srugo also had his Monarch dual meet debut downing Vinicius Bortolatto at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1.
The Monarch duo of Cancado and Igarashi kicked off the spring season by allowing Winthrop's Padilla and Portugal only one set. The 33rd-ranked Monarch doubles team at No. 2 singles earned the victory 8-1.
Also in doubles, Srugo and Seleznev teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles against Santos and Takahashi and Grover and newcomer Matthew Sands (Nassua, Bahamas) defeated Barbosa and Bortolatto, 8-5.
The Monarch men's tennis team returns to action the VCU 4-1 Invitational on Sunday taking on James Madison and Richmond.
