Men's Tennis Results From The Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational Of Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- In the first tournament of the fall season for the Old Dominion men's tennis team, the Monarchs' Eidy Igarashi (São José do Rio Preto, Brazil) captured the Flight A singles title and teamed with junior Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) to earn the Flight A doubles bracket.
Igarashi, the 2005 CAA Rookie of the Year, three victories en-route to the title. Seeded second in the Flight A singles bracket, he opened with a 6-2, 6-1, quarterfinal win over Kenneth Brown from Howard. In the semifinals, Igarashi fought back from a 1-6 first set deficit to Radford's James Lloyd to take the match with 6-2, 6-4 victories in the second and third set. In the final, Igarashi used straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, over Radford's Martin Sayer to capture the title.
Sayer reached the finals by upsetting ODU's Henrique Cancado in the semifinals. Cancado fell to the eventual finals participant despite taking the first set, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Cancado's Flight A bracket opened with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Damon Martin from North Carolina A&T.
Igarashi and Cancado teamed up for three wins en-route to the Flight A doubles title. The campaign opened with an 8-4 win over Howard's Kenneth Brown and Faron Carter in the quarterfinals and followed with an 8-3 victory over John Snead and Jesse Tarr from CAA rival James Madison. In the finals, Igarashi and Cancado blanked Queens' College's duo of Wojceich Stuchlik and Andrey Vasiliev for the title.
Junior Jon Antle (Va. Beach, Va.) also made appearance this weekend in tournament action, playing in the Flight D singles bracket. Antle fell to Scott Davidson from James Madison in the main draw, 6-1, 6-2, but would go on to capture the consolation bracket. In the consolation bracket, he earned three victories. Antle played his way to a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Christopher Newport's David Weiner, a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Christopher Newport's Tommy Harris, and won the consolation bracket with a 7-5, 6-1 win over JMU's Michael McGettigan.

The Monarch men's tennis team will return to action at the University of Virginia Invitational in Charlottesville. Tournament play will begin on Friday, September 23rd and continue through Sunday.
