Monarch Tennis Defeats James Madison In First VCU 4-1 Invitational Match-Up

RICHMOND, Va. -- The Old Dominion men's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the young season as they blanked their second straight opponent with a 5-0 victory over CAA rival James Madison, 5-0, at the Virginia Commonwealth 4-1 Invitational Sunday afternoon in Richmond.
Like they did against Winthrop on Saturday, the Monarchs earned set straight victories in each singles match.
Harel Srugo (Kibutz Gazit, Israel) picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Jesse Tarr at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, junior Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) allowed the Dukes' Bob Allensworth to capture only one game. Cancado blanked Allensworth, 6-0, in the first set and won the match with a 6-1 second set. No. 90 Eidy Igarashi (São José do Rio Preto, Brazil) only allowed two games in his No. 3 singles match. After earning the 6-2 win in the first set, he blanked Carlin Campbell, 6-0, in set number two. Rounding out singles action was newcomer Alex Seleznev (Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic) at No. 4 singles. The Monarch freshman earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Brian Rubenstein.
In the lone doubles match-up, junior Nate Grover (Suffolk, Va.) and freshman Matt Sandes (Nassau, Bahamas) teamed up for a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 10-7 win over John Snead and Brian Clay.
The Monarchs will also face the University of Richmond later this evening.
