NEWPORT NEWS, Va.-- The Old Dominion men's tennis team's fell to top seeded Virginia Commonwealth, 4-2, at the 2006 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) at Huntington Park Saturday afternoon.

The Monarchs, who were seeded second in the tournament and are ranked 53rd in the ITA Poll, fell to 25-8 and will await the NCAA committee's decison to see if they will be awarded an at-large birth to the team tournament.

Virginia Commonwealth, ranked 12th nationally, meanwhile earns the CAA's automatic bid as they took home the conference title for the 10th time in school history.

All three doubles matches were competitive as the teams fought to get off to a 1-0 start. In the No. 1 contest, Harel Srugo and Aleksandr Seleznev of ODU knocked off the Rams' combo of Arnaud Lecloerec and Petr Olsak 8-6. VCU's No. 2 duo of Francesc Lleal and Sergi Arumi answered back with an 8-6 win of their own over Henrique Cancado and Eidy Igarashi. The crowd then migrated to the No. 3 court as the teams battled for the doubles point. VCU's Emil Lindgren and Sebastian Ripoll came out on top, defeating Rodrigo Souza and Nate Grover 9-8.

Following the break, VCU quickly jumped out to a 3-0 match lead after two singles wins by Lindgren and Daniel Lacombe. The No. 5 Lacombe eliminated ODU's Souza by a score of 6-3, 6-3, while the No. 6 Lindgren recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Grover.

The Monarchs' top two players responded with consecutive wins to tighten the score at 3-2. In a matchup of the CAA's Co-Players of the Year, No. 1 Srugo of ODU took care of VCU's Lecloerec 6-2, 6-2. Cancado then ousted Olsak at No. 2 by a score of 7-5, 6-1.

The attention was then turned to the No. 3 court, where a back-and-forth match would prove to be the clincher for the Rams. Arumi outlasted Igarashi in the first set, earning a 7-6 win with an 8-6 tiebreak. He then finished off the match with a 6-3 second-set triumph, culminating with a tremendous rally that had both players running sideline to sideline.
