Women's Tennis Falls to No. 43 VCU, 6-1

NORFOLK, Va. - Diana Ivanova won in three sets but it was not enough as No. 43 VCU defeated Old Dominion University women's tennis Saturday evening at the Folkes Stevens Tennis Center. The match was the first outdoor home match for the Lady Monarchs this season.

The Rams earned the doubles point with a pair of 8-1 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Diana Ivanova and Nikol Hristova were up 7-3 at No. 1 doubles when the match was called.

VCU (14-4) got on the board in singles as Yukako Noi was up 5-0 in the first set at No. 3 when ODU defaulted. Salome Kvitashvili and Olga Barscheuskaya were 6-4, 6-1 winners at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

Juliana Pires battled at No. 4 singles but fell 6-4, 6-4 to Olga Terteac. Nikol Hristova dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision at No. 1 while Ivanova picked up the lone win for ODU with a hard-fought 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 three-set win over Josefin Hjertquist.

After the match, the Lady Monarchs held an event with the Special Olympians of Hampton Roads.

More than 40 Special Olympians participated in drills held by ODU players for about an hour.

It was the second-straight year Old Dominion held the event.
