Lady Monarchs Complete Action At Bulldog Classic

ATHENS, Ga. – The Old Dominion University women’s tennis team completed action in the prestigious 2013 Bulldog Classic on Sunday. Joining Old Dominion in this year’s Bulldog Classic was N.C. State, South Florida and host, Georgia.

Of the many Old Dominion highlights, perhaps the performance of two rising stars in Ingrid Vojcinakova and Marijana Novakovic stood out the most. Both Vojcinakova and Novakovic are true freshmen under head coach Dom Manilla. Not only did the pair of freshmen each pick up their first career single’s win at the college level, but together they also earned their first double’s victory of their young collegiate careers.

Also, picking up singles wins for the Lady Monarchs this weekend were: Melissa Esnal Olguin and Nika Khmolovska.

Old Dominion also saw success in doubles from a pair of sophomores when Nikol Hristova and Aleksandra Mitrovska dominated NC State’s Elisha Hande and Nicole Martinez, 8-1.

The Old Dominion University women’s tennis team is their Friends of ODU Tennis Tournament. The Friends of Tennis Tournament will begin on Sept. 27 and run through the 29th. The event will be held at the Virginia Beach Tennis and Country Club. There will be separate tournaments for men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The entry deadline is Wed., Sept. 25. $40 per player $60 per player to play in two events Checks should be made payable to the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation (ODAF). Proceeds assist the ODU Men's and Women's Tennis Programs.
All 11 athletes from Old Dominion University’s women’s tennis team saw action throughout the first two days of the 2013 Bulldog Classic on the campus of the University of Georgia. Joining ODU and Georgia in the field are NC State and South Florida. Old Dominion head coach Dom Manilla had a great mix of upper and underclassmen produce positive results on Friday and Saturday.

Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex has a capacity of 4,500, which includes a total of 16 courts (12 outdoor and four indoor). Georgia tennis facility is regarded as one of the best collegiate tennis facilities in America. The complex has hosted the Men's NCAA Championships a total of 26 times, as well as served as host to the Women's NCAA Championships five times and will make it a sixth time after this spring season, as UGA will be hosting the 2013-14 Women’s NCAA Championship.

Four Lady Monarchs went 1-1 after their first two single matches: Ingrid Vojcinakova (freshman), Marijana Novakovic (freshman), Melissa Esnal Olguin (senior) and Nika Khmolovska (senior). Vojcinakova defeated Christy Sipes of NC State (6-4, 6-0); Novakovic took down Elisha Hande from NC State (6-3, 1-6, 7-6); Olguin beat NC State’s Taylor Zaytoun (6-1, 6-1); Khmolovska earned victory in three sets over Natalia Janowicz of NC State (6-1, 5-7, 7-6).

Over the first two days of competition in Athens, Ga., two pairs of Lady Monarchs pulled off big wins for Old Dominion. Again freshmen Vojcinakova and Novakovic shined for the Lady Monarchs as they defeated South Florida’s duo of Vera Bessonova and Olga Martinez, 8-6. Also leading the way for ODU, were sophomores Hristova and Mitrovska, as they toppled NC State’s Elisha Hande and Nicole Martinez, 8-1.
