Women's Tennis Kicks Off "Elite 8" Collegiate Invitational With A Win

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team kicked off the "Elite 8" Collegiate Invitational Tournament with a 6-1 victory over Morgan State this afternoon at Owl Creek Tennis Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The victory upped the Lady Monarchs record to 9-8 overall as they await the winner of this afternoon's UNC-Wilmington/Longwood match.

Old Dominion captured the doubles point by allowing just one set between first and second doubles. The Lady Monarch duo of Kerstin Endlich (Neustadt, Germany) and Fernanda Luiz (Nova Lima, Brazil) blanked Morgan State's Ashley Harper and Walaa Elsir, 8-0, while Barbara Costa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Barbara Kerner (Herxheim, Germany) downed Renae Alleyne and Imani Willis, 8-1 at the number two spot.

In singles action, Old Dominion captured five of the six singles matches defaulting at No. 6 singles. Two Lady Monarchs gave up just one set apiece. At No. 3 singles, Fernanda Luiz defeated Imani Willis, 6-1, 6-0, while Barbara Kerner downed Renae Alleyne, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4 singles.

Other winners for the Lady Monarchs included Old Dominion's top singles player Kerstin Endlich defeating Ashley Harper, 6-2, 6-2. Barbara Costa picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Walaa Elsir at No. 2 singles and Linda Garder (Tallinn, Estonia) earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles against Aidah Rasheed.
