Women's Tennis Opens Season At Hampton Roads And William & Mary Invites

NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion women's tennis team will kick off the season as they participate in both the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Virginia Beach and the William & Mary Invitational.
The Lady Monarchs welcome back six letterwinners from last year's team losing only Kerstin Endlich (Neustadt, Germany) to graduation. Among the Lady Monarchs scheduled to participate at the Hampton Roads Invite are junior Barbara Costa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), junior Linda Garder (Tallinn, Estonia), and senior Larissa Santos (Florianopolis, Brazil).
Costa is a two-time singles flight winner at the Hampton Roads Invite and last season teamed with Kerner to capture a doubles title. Garder meanwhile teammed with Larissa Santos to win a the doubles title as well. In singles action Kerner defeated teammate Garder in the semifinals, who in turn saw Santos defeat Kerner in the singles finale.
The Lady Monarchs' other event of the weekend is the 14th annual William and Mary Invitational. The three-day event will be comprised of six singles flights and four doubles flights, being played at the McCormick Nagelsen Tennis Center as well as the Busch Courts, Rec. Courts and Kiwanis Courts in Williamsburg.
Participating in the William & Mary Invite are sophomore Charleen Haarhoff (Durban, South Africa) and junior Fernanda Luiz (Nova Lima, Brazil). Haarhoff joined the Lady Monarchs in the spring of last season and earned Second Team All-CAA honors in both singles and doubles. Luiz earned a 20-8 singles and 36-18 doubles mark playing her way to Third Team All-CAA in singles and Second Team All-CAA in doubles.
