Former Lady Monarch Falls In First Round Of U.S. Open

Queens, N.Y. - Tzipora Obziler, a former women's tennis standout at Old Dominion University and currently the 98th ranked player in the world, fell in the opening round of the 2007 U.S. Open today with a three-set loss to Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark. Obziler won the first set 6-4 against the 86th ranked Wozniacki, but fell 2-6, 5-7 in the final two sets.

The 34-year old Obziler was attempting to advance to the second round of the Grand Slam event for the first time since 2004 when she lost to defending champion Justine Henin-Hardenne. Ranked the No. 1 collegiate women's tennis player in the country in the fall of 1995, Obziler has played in all four Grand Slams this year falling in the first round at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, while advancing to the second round at Roland Garros.
