PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The doubles team of Lara van Rooyen (Pretoria, South Africa) and Patricia Araujo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) qualified for the main doubles draw of the 2001 Omni Hotels Eastern Region Tennis Championships hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. The duo was one of four teams from the 16-team qualifying draw to advance.

The tandem opened play with an 8-4 victory over Brown and clinched a berth to the main draw with an 8-6 victory over Army. With the two wins, Araujo and van Rooyen join teammates Nataly Cahana (Quiriat Bialik, Israel) and Ana Radeljevic (Zagreb, Croatia) in the doubles main draw.

In other qualifying action, both Araujo and Julia Sotiriu (Wendelstein, Germany) were eliminated from the singles qualifying round. Araujo dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Arden Fredeking of Dartmouth, while Sotiriu lost her match 6-0, 6-4 to Jamie Ahmed of Dartmouth. Ahmed went on to become one of eight singles players from the qualifying round to advance to the main draw.

Van Rooyen, Cahana and Radeljevic will begin play in the main draw in singles action later today.

The Omni Hotels Regional Championship, the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament, dates back to 1981 and has previously been known as the Rolex Regional Champions and the ITA Regional Championships. This event is the second of three national collegiate tennis championships held during the season. The first, the Riviera Women's All-American Championships took place a few weeks ago and the third are the year-end NCAA Championships. Finalists will go on to represent the region at the 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships held Nov. 8-11 at the Brookhaven Country Club, located just outside of Dallas, in Farmers Branch, Texas.
