NORFOLK, Va. -- Tzipi Obziler ('95) announced her retirement from professional tennis on Thursday, bringing an end to a long career of commitment and dedication to the sport. The 1995 ITA National Clay Courts champion as a Lady Monarch, Obziler was ranked #1 in the country and went on to become a Top 100 player internationally in 2007.

"Tzipi certainly put Old Dominion tennis on the map when she won the 1995 ITA National Clay Court Tournament while becoming the #1 college player in the country," said head coach Darryl Cummings. "Her greatest accomplishment to me was seeing her become a role model for female players when she became the oldest female player to break into the WTA Top 100. She inspired players on the WTA Tour with her professionalism and I envision her taking a leadership role in Israeli tennis."

In her career, Obziler played the main draw of all four grand slam tennis tournaments and in 2004, advanced to the second round of the U.S. Open, falling to World No. 1 Justine Henin. She became the oldest player to break into the WTA Top 100 at the age of 34 and was ranked as high as 75th in the world in July 2007.

She played in Arthur Ashe Stadium at the U.S. Open and Center Court of the French Open. With 61 career Fed Cup appearances, she tied the career mark for appearances as she was dedicated to playing for Israel. She was also a World Team Tennis player.

Obziler was nationally ranked #1 in Singles during the 1995 campaign, and also ranked 30th in doubles action with Luciano Araujo. The tandem was the #5 doubles team in the region. Tzipi was the champion of the ITA Clay Court Tournament and in the same year, she was a finalist at the ITA All-American Tournament.
