Lady Monarchs Hit Road to Williamsburg for 2PM Sat. Tip vs. W&M

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s basketball team (5-5) will travel to the College of William and Mary (2-6) on Saturday, Dec. 21 for a 2 p.m. tipoff. ODU is coming off of a hard fought loss at the hands the Pitt Panthers less than a week ago, but had a three-game winning streak going into that game after turning in convincing wins over Boston, UMass Lowell, and Maryland Eastern Shore.

ALL-TIME SERIES
These schools have met a total of 58 times leading up to Saturday’s showdown. Old Dominion has won 53 of the 58, dominating the series, but William and Mary has made this series more competitive as of late, earning two wins over the Monarchs in the last three years.

The Tribe (2-6)
The Tribe of William and Mary enter Saturday’s contest at 2-6 coming of a win against Radford (67-53) on Wednesday, Dec. 19. William and Mary bounced back after a hard fought loss to La Salle (73-59) on Dec. 5

Thus far, W&M are led by senior forward Kaitlyn Mathieu (14.4 ppg) and freshman guard Marlena Tremba (12.4 pgg) who account for 42% of the Tribe’s total offense; Tremba also leads the team with 23 assists. Another major contributor to William and Mary’s offense is Kyla Kerstetter, who averages above 11.0 points per game and three steals per game. Jazemen Boone has accumulated 19 steals on the season, in addition to her 21 assists.

It took a monumental effort and a 23-6 run for W&M to earn the victory over Radford (2-8) Wednesday night at Kaplan Arena in Williamsburg, Va. Kaitlyn Mathieu recorded her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Also junior forward Jazmen Boone led the Tribe with 20 points. The Tribe had a season high 18 steals, nine of which came from junior Kyla Kerstetter, tying the school record. Kerstetter has accumulated 24 steals on the season.

The Tribe are led by first year head coach Ed Swanson. Swanson spent 23 years at Sacred Heart, where he took the Division II school to Division I in 1999. At Sacred Heart, Swanson recoded 13 straight winning seasons and 12 straight seasons with 18 or more victories, including six with 20 or more wins.

The Old Dominion University Lady Monarch’s (5-5) Last Time Out
The Lady Monarchs are looking to rebound from their loss to Pitt on Sunday Dec 15. Before that game ODU had won four straight, defeating Boston, UMass Lowell, and Maryland Eastern Shore. ODU turned in commanding victories, as they pummeled UMass Lowell 90-57 in front of a record-setting crowd of 8,086 on Education Day and then dominated UMES, 82-57. Adding to the momentum, junior forward Shae Kelley was tabbed C-USA Player of the Week after recording four consecutive double-doubles. Kelley’s accomplishment marks the first time in history that an ODU player has received the honor.

In the game versus Pitt, Chelsia Painter led all Monarch scorers with 10 points and came away with six rebounds. Shae Kelley added nine points and eight rebounds. The Lady Monarchs led the entire first half and six minutes into the second half. After the Panthers gained the lead, they started to pull away with help from an 11-0 run with 3:36 to play.

As a team, ODU has now racked up 97 steals in comparison to opponents’ 65. The Lady Monarchs are also averaging 9.7 steals per game. Individually, Shae Kelley is still averaging a noteworthy 16.8 points per game and 11.3 rebounds. Senior guard Stephanie Gardner trails her with an average of 10.8 points per game.

LOOKING AHEAD
After a minor break from competition, the Lady Monarchs will remain on the road to take on Virginia Commonwealth University on Monday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m. Next, Old Dominion will travel to Duke before returning back home on Jan. 5 when they take on North Carolina Central.
