Alexander & Slaton Lead Monarchs Over Delaware, 7-3

NEWARK, DE-- ODU freshman righthander Tommy Alexander (Forty Fort, PA.) pitched five scoreless innings of relief, and designated hitter Ben Slaton (Magnolia, MS.) keyed a four-run rally in the seventh to help the Monarchs (22-21/12-11) defeat Delaware (27-15/12-8), 7-3 Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Trailing, 3-0, the Monarchs Josh Eldridge (Lorton, VA.) gave ODU its first run in the fourth when he scored from third on a Delaware throwing error. In the sixth, ODU tied the game on an error on Mike Perez's (Fairfax Station, VA) grounder, as Ben Slaton and Jordan Negrini (Kihei, HI)scored.
ODU took a 6-3 lead in the seventh on a bases clearing three-run double by Ben Slaton which scored Connor Myers (Middletown, MD.) , Ben Verlander (Maidens, VA.) and Josh Eldridge. Mike Perez then singled home Josiah Burney (Gloucester, VA.), for the 7-3 Monarch lead.
Alexander pitched five innings, allowing just two hits, one walk and striking out three for his second collegiate win of the year.
Delaware got on the board first with a solo homer from Nick Ferdinand to lead off the bottom of the second inning. DJ Long later scored in the inning on a bases loaded sacrifice fly RBI by Ty Warrington. Jimmy Yezzo took sole possession of the CAA homerun lead with a solo shot in the third, his 11th.
Slaton led ODU with three hits, three RBI and scored twice on the day. Ben Verlander also added three hits, while Jordan Negrini came up with two hits today. Mike Perez joined Slaton with multiple RBI's today with two.
The third and final game of the league series is Sunday at 1 p.m.
