Monarchs Take Series From Delaware With 4-3 Win

NEWARK, DE-- The ODU Baseball Monarchs (23-21/13-11) defeated Delaware (27-16/12-9), 4-3 to take the series at the Bob Hannah Stadium. With Delaware runners on first and third freshman reliever Jake Josephs came on to get the final out of the game. Freshman PJ Higgins led ODU with three hits and shortstop Tyler Urps knocked in two runs.
Thirdbaseman Jordan Negrini (Kihei,HI.) belted a solo homer in the fourth and Conner Myers scored in the fifth on a sacrifice fly RBI by Josh Eldridge (Lorton, VA.). In the sixth TJ Higgins hit a two-out triple to center, then came home on Tyler Urps single.
ODU starter Ryan Yarbrough pitched into the ninth inning for the second straight weekend. He went eight innings allowing only one earned run, one walk and six strikeouts.
Delaware's Jimmy Yezzo, the nation's leading hitter at .447 put Delaware on the board with an opposite field homer over the leftfield fence, his CAA Leading 12th of the year. In the bottom of the sixth UD scored two more on RBI hits from Yezzo and Nick Ferdinand, to cut ODU's lead to 4-3.
The Blue Hens threatened in the ninth with Tyler Powell at third and Andrew Burgess on first and two outs, but Josephs came on to get Joe Gaccchino to foul out to third base to end the rally and pick up his first collegiate save.
The Monarchs return home Tuesday to play VMI at 6 p.m.
