NORFOLK, VA--- Old Dominion junior outfielder Ben Verlander has been named a semifinalist for the Gregg Olson Award which is awarded to college baseball's top player who elevates his game to an elite level throughout the season.

Verlander, who was named first team All-CAA earlier this week ranks eighth in the CAA in hitting at .367, third in homers with 11 and led ODU in runs scored with 46, along with four triples and 13 stolen bases. The rightfielder also knocked in 37 runs. Verlander was CAA Player of the Week three times this season as well as being named Louisville Slugger National Team of the Week after his three homerun performance against Northeastern on March 9. He hit .380 with eight homers and 24 RBI in 27 CAA games. Verlander was also named the team MVP.

The award is named after former Auburn Tiger star pitcher, and former major leaguer Gregg Olson. Olson lettered at Auburn from 1986-88 and is the school's only two-time All-America selection. As a freshman he was 7-3 with a 5.72 ERA in 19 appearances (14 starts). Hal Baird, his coach, moved him to the bullpen his sophomore season and he became one of the top closers in college baseball history. Olson was the 1989 AL Rookie of the Year with the Baltimore Orioles, And pitched in the Major Leagues from 1988 to 2001.

The winner of the 2013 Gregg Olson Award will be named in Omaha, Neb., during the College World Series (June 15-26) at the TD Ameritrade Park. At the conclusion of the regular season a selection of five finalists will be made by an independent panel.
