Top-seed Old Dominion Advances Past William & Mary In CAA First Round
Manteo, NC (May 16) - Old Dominion sophomore Jeff Eure went 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBI to lead the Monarchs (33-20-1) to a 16-11 victory over #8-seed William & Mary (29-24) May 16 in the first round of the CAA Baseball Tournament at Coy Tillett Sr. Memorial Field.
ODU sent 14 batters to the plate in scoring nine first inning runs to take a commanding lead and held off the Tribe to advance in the double-elimination event. The Monarchs got to the ninth batter in the lineup before they suffered their first out in the big inning, while pounding out seven hits - six of them singles - during the first.
The Tribe battled back with three runs in the second, and three more in the third, but the Monarchs continued their offensive assault with three-run innings of their own in the fifth and seventh to put the game out of reach. Junior shortstop Tim Hummel, the CAA Player of the Year, was 1-for-3 with one run and four RBI, while senior Joe Troilo (3-for-4) and senior Jason Greiner (1-for-4) each knocked in three runs for ODU.
The teams combined for 33 hits and 27 runs in the game, as all 18 starters recorded at least one hit. ODU junior starter Shawn Weaver tossed 147 pitches to pick up the win after working seven innings, while allowing 15 hits and 11 runs - 10 earned - with one walk, and nine strikeouts.
Senior catcher Brian Rogers led the Tribe at the plate, going 4-for-5 with one run and three RBI. Junior third baseman Stephen Booker and freshman center fielder Michael Brown added three hits apiece for W&M.
Top-seed Old Dominion moves on to play the winner of JMU/VCU on Thursday at 4:00 p.m., while William & Mary will play the loser of ECU/GMU Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.
