Baseball Monarchs Sign 10 Recruits

NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion University head baseball coach Chris Finwood announced the signing of 10 recruits for the 2013 season that will include four pitchers, two outfielders, a catcher and three infielders.

Joining the Monarch baseball family are: Tommy Alexander- RHP from Wyoming Valley West HS in PA;Brian Beard- OF from Great Bridge HS;Conner Crookham- IF from Hatboro-Horsham HS in PA; PJ Higgins- IF from The Gunnery Prep School in CT.; Jake Josephs- LHP from South County HS; Pat Kane- IF from Gloucester Catholic HS in NJ;Alex Kowalczyk- C from Downingtown East HS in Downingtown, PA.; Connor Myers- OF from Middletown HS in Middletown, MD.; Patrick Phillips- RHP from The Steward School in Richmond and Andy Roberts- LHP from Iowa Western CC - From Prescott, AZ.

INFORMATION ON THE FUTURE MONARCHS TOMMY ALEXANDER- RHP Wyoming Valley West High School (PA), Forty Fort, PA. Led his 2011 team as a junior in wins, strikeouts and innings pitched with an ERA of 2.45 Tied for the 2011 Wyoming Valley Conference strikeout lead with 50 for the regular season Named a first-team all-star by Wyoming Valley Conference coaches. Selected to the Citizen's Voice and the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader's all-star team.

FINWOOD ON ALEXANDER " TOMMY IS A VERY PITCHABLE RIGHTHANDER WITH A GOOD ARM AND DELIVERY. SHOWS GREAT COMMAND ON HIS FASTBALL. PLAYS ON ONE OF THE BEST TRAVEL PROGRAMS IN THE COUNTRY FOR JOHN WELLS AND BASEBALL U. WE EXPECT TOMMY TO COMPETE FOR A STARTING SPOT EARLY IN HIS CAREER."

BRIAN BEARD-OF Great Bridge High School, Chesapeake, Va. 2010 Honorable Mention All Southeastern District outfielder 2011 2nd team All Southeastern District outfielder 2011 Group AAA State championship baseball team member 2011 selection to the Virginia State All-star team - Coventry Commonwealth Games - Silver Medalist His father-Jeff Beard was an All-ECAC South Performer at ODU

FINWOOD ON BEARD " BRIAN IS A HARD NOSED GREAT COMPETITOR WHO IS THE SON OF FORMER MONARCH STANDOUT JEFF BEARD. BRIAN WAS A BIG PART OF GREAT BRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL'S STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM LAST YEAR. HE IS A BIG STRONG KID AND IS VERY VERSATILE. WE THINK BRIAN CAN PLAY OUTFIELD AND CORNER INFIELD AS WELL. BRIAN IS ALSO THE QUARTERBACK ON THE GREAT BRIDGE FOOTBALL TEAM."

CONNER CROOKHAM-INF Hatboro, PA.- Hatboro-Horsham High School Named top underclassman by Baseball Factory in Baltimore, MD. In 2011 Played shortstop for the 2011 All-Star Baseball Academy- Warminster Showcase Team 2011 Selected to the Team One Showcase at Waterfront Park.

FINWOOD ON CROOKHAM- "CONNER IS A TREMENDOUS DEFENDER WITH A GREAT ARM WHO WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO PLAY ALL THREE INFIELD POSTIONS IN COLLEGE. WE REALLY LIKE CONNER'S UPSIDE WITH A REALLY PROJECTABLE FRAME. CONNER ALSO HAS A CHANCE TO PITCH AT THE NEXT LEVEL."

All Conference Basketball player as a senior year in 2011 Lyman Hall Male Athlete of the Year June 2011

JAKE JOSEPH'S - LHP South County High School , Fairfax Station, VA. 5' 11" 190lb who helped lead South County High School to the 2011 Patriot District Championship Northern Region Champions, and top ranked AAA school in the State of Virginia with 28-1 record. 2011 All-District Selection (Junior year) by the coaches, with 5-0 regular season record, 2.38 ERA with complete game in Virginia State Championship Game. Honorable mention All-District in Football

FINWOOD ON JOSEPH "JAKE PITCHED FOR THE STATE RUNNER UP SOUTH COUNTY AND WAS A TEAMMATE OF CURRENT MONARCH MIKE PEREZ. JAKE IS AN OUTSTANDING LHP PROSPECT AND WE EXPECT HIM TO COMPETE FOR INNINGS RIGHT AWAY." PAT KANE- Infielder Gloucester Catholic HS in Sewell, NJ. Hit .490 with 39 runs and 21 stolen bases Helped team finish ranked number one in state and Ranked 8th in ESPN national ranking. Earned All-Conference and All-County selection. Won back-to-back state championships in high school and in senior legion. Kane also scored 47 career goals along with 25 assists and was 1st team All-Conference Soccer for four years.

FINWOOD ON KANE "PAT IS THE DEFINITION OF A BLUE COLLAR PLAYER. HE CAN REALLY RUN AND BUNT AND WE THINK HE WILL ADD A LOT OF GRIT TO OUR LINEUP. PAT CAN PLAY 2B AND OUTFIELD AND COMES FROM A GREAT BASEBALL BACKGROUND . HE PLAYS FOR A GREAT PROGRAM FOR DENNIS BARTH AND GLOUCESTOR CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL. PAT IS A MEMBER OF THE PRESTIGIOUS BROOKLAWN AMERICAN LEGION TEAM."

Captain/Co-Captain of MHS Varsity Baseball Team Led Middletown to 2A Piedmont Division championship 2011 MVAL (Middletown Valley Athletic League) First Team 2011 Frederick News Post All Area First Team 2011 Gazette All Area First Team Led Piedmont Conference in hits (35), runs (32),and doubles (9) Second in stolen bases with 15 Hit .455

FINWOOD ON PHILLIPS "PATRICK IS A BIG PROJECTABLE RHP WITH AN EASY DELIVERY. HE SHOULD REALLY PROGRESS IN COACH LAVIGNE'S PITCHING PROGRAM. PATRICK HAS WON A LOT OF GAMES AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL AND WITH HIS FRAME, HIS BEST DAYS ARE WELL IN FRONT OF HIM."

ANDY ROBERTS -LHP Iowa Western CC in Council Bluffs, Iowa 2009 Pitcher of the Year in his Junior year at Prescott High School in Arizona. He compiled a 1.45 ERA at Iowa Western CC in spring 2011 He had the most appearances (18) on his team in spring 2011 Made two appearances at the 2011 JUCO World Series He went 6-0 in the Arizona Collegiate Wood bat League in the summer of 2011 Compiled the lowest ERA in the league at 2.53 and was the starting pitcher for the All-Star game.

FINWOOD ON ROBERTS " ANDY IS A VETERAN LHP FROM ONE OF THE BEST JUCO PROGRAMS IN THE COUNTRY. HE PLAYS FOR A GREAT COACH IN MARC RARDIN AND HELPED HIS TEAM REACH THE JUCO WORLD SERIES LAST YEAR. ANDY SHOULD HAVE A CHANCE TO JUMP RIGHT INTO OUR WEEKEND ROTATION NEXT YEAR."
