McGirr and Lane Pitch Richmond Past ODU, 6-2

    NORFOLK, VA. -- Mike McGirr and Brian Lane scattered nine hits and combined to pitch the Spiders of Richmond to a 6-2 CAA win over the Monarchs of Old Dominion Friday afternoon. ODU is now 6-14 overall and 0-1 in the CAA. Richmond is 9-9 overall and 1-0 in the CAA.

    Richmond scored four runs in the first off Monarch starter Shawn Weaver (Loganton, Pa.). John Nathans singled in a run,and AJ Board's sac fly scored another. The Spiders also scored on a wild pitch and an error. Vito Chiaravalloti doubled home Nathans in the fifth and Ryan Martin slammed a solo homer in the sixth to complete the scoring.

    The Monarchs scored in the fourth as freshman Mark Michael (Gibbstown, NJ.) scored on an error and in the seventh Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, Md.) singled home David Vilardi (Fishkill, NY.).

    McGirr and Lane walked no Monarchs and fanned seven. Weaver fanned eight in seven plus innings of work, but walked five.

    Allen Strick and John Oehler (Audubon, NJ.) each had two hits on the day.

    Old Dominion and Richmond play game two in Richmond on Saturday at 1 p.m.
