Seahawks Edge Monarchs, 8-7

NORFOLK, VA. (April 7, 2000) -- Second baseman David Ange knocked in four runs, including two in the fifth inning that put UNC Wilmington up for good and give the Seahawks an 8-7 CAA victory over Old Dominion April 7 at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. UNCW is now 25-11 overall and 9-1 in the CAA, while the Monarchs drop to 18-15-1 overall and 5-5 in the CAA.

Ange knocked in Jamie Hemmingway in the second, then singled home Jamie Hemmingway and Daniel Marsh to give the Seahawks a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning. In the UNCW three-run sixth, he singled home David McPherson to complete his three- for-four day. Daniel Marsh had four hits for UNCW in five at bats.

The Monarchs were led by Tim Hummel (Montgomery, NY.) who hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Senior leftfielder Jason Greiner (Wexford, Pa.) came up with two hits and three runs batted in. He hit solo shot in the fourth, then brought the Monarchs to within one run in the bottom of the ninth with a single, scoring John Oehler (Audubon, NJ.) And Joe Troilo (Avondale, Pa.).

UNCW pitcher Anthony Kozol picked up his seventh win of the season, fanning seven and walking only one, but reliever Brad Overton came in, in the ninth after Tim Hummel singled up the middle to put runners on first and third with two outs. Overton then got Jared Musolf to ground out to end the game.

The two teams play game again on Saturday at 2 p.m.
