NORFOLK, VA. - Bryan Gillespie's two-out single plated Jose Pabon to give the Rams of Virginia Commonwealth a 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Old Dominion Friday night. VCU is now 21-11 overall and 4-0 in the CAA, while ODU is now 13-14 overall and 0-3 in the CAA.
Monarch freshman righthander Justin Verlander (Goochland, Va.) pitched his fifth complete game, fanning nine, walking only one in the loss. He now has a 1.79 earned run average and 77 strikeouts in 71 innings through nine games. Brian Marshall picked up the win for the Rams in relief.
In the top of the ninth, Pabon singled with one out, then Nick Jones singled with two outs. Both runners moved up on a pass ball and Gillespie singled to scoring Pabon, but ODU leftfielder Demarque Hairston threw out Jones at the plate to end the inning.
The Monarchs stranded nine runners with four hits and five receiving walks. VCU starter Davy Martin allowed four hits and fanned seven in seven- plus innings. The two teams play game two of the CAA series Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Complex.
