Baseball Monarchs Top Richmond 8-5

NORFOLK, VA (March 18) - Senior outfielder Jason Greiner and sophomore first baseman Jared Musolf each drove in two runs as the Old Dominion Monarchs topped CAA-rival Richmond, 8-5, March 18 at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. The Monarchs improve to 11-11-1 on the year, 1-1 in the CAA as Richmond falls to 11-9 on the year, 1-1 in the CAA.

Old Dominion jumped on top early, scoring two runs in the first on zero hits as Joe Troilo knocked in Jesse Thomas on a groundout and Jared Musolf knocked in Brent Sollenberger on a fielder's choice. The Monarchs added another run in the third as Sollenberger singled home Greiner.

Richmond came back with a run in the third as GR Shalick drove in Ryan Haness. Old Dominion put up runs in the four and fifth before tacking on three in the bottom of the sixth.

In the sixth, Musolf scored and drove in a run on a double, while Tim Hummel and Jesse Thomas each scored after walking to start the inning. With the Monarchs up 8-1, Richmond battled back with a run in the seventh and then three in the ninth to make the final, 8-5.

Monarch starter Shawn Weaver earned the win after tossing seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on nine hits, while walking one and striking out nine. He improves to 3-3.

Shalick was two-for-four with two RBI for the Spiders, while John Nathans had a hit and two RBI in a pinch-hit apperance. The two teams square off again on Sunday in the final game of the three game series.
