Verlander & Smith Earn VaSID All-State Honors

NORFOLK, VA-- Old Dominion University pitchers Justin Verlander (Goochland, VA.) and Donnie Smith (Portsmouth, VA.) were selected to the University Division All-State squad chosen by the Virginia College Sports Information Directors (VASID).
Verlander earned first team honors as he completed the season with a 7-6 record and a 3.49 earned run average. Verlanded ranked third nationally with a 12.8 strikeout average and set an ODU, CAA and Virginia record with 151 strikeouts in 105.2 innings this year. He also owns the career record at ODU, the CAA and State with 427 in 335.2 innings. He was the second overall pick of the Major League Baseball draft by the Detroit Tigers.
Donnie Smith earned honorable mention all-state honors. Smith led the CAA with a 2.29 earned run average. Smith compiled a 6-2 record with six saves this year. He was selected in the fourth round by the St. Louis Cardinals. Smith signed earlier this week and will report to the New Jersey Cardinals in the NY-Penn League.
University of Virginia firstbaseman/pitcher Joe Koshansky was named Player of the Year, while Virginia head coach Brian O'Conner earned top honors as the State's Coach of the Year.
